We
prepared for our unofficial opening in June 2009 with much planning, research
and talking to people. Our research took us to shops all over New England
and other parts of the country. After looking at the pros and cons of starting
this new business, two facts became very clear. First, we certainly
recognized that we are experiencing
some tough times which could mean a slow start. But, we also know that
there is a 'silver lining' to these tough times which is that people are
“going back to basics” including going back to knitting. From our own experience,
we know that knitting is gratifying and a productive way to spend time.
Individuals and families are finding out that it doesn't cost much money
to knit and enjoy each others company.
Our passion for this
craft was handed down to us by our parents and ancestors who were sheep
growers, wool carders, spinners, knitters, crocheters and weavers. So,
we tended to
favor going ahead with our plans because of their influence. With the support
of my husband, Jim, and the encouragement of our family and friends, we
decided that this might actually be the ideal time for our ‘Bayberry Knitting’
adventure.
We selected the center
of Plainville, Connecticut as the site for our business. We opened unofficially
on 3 June 2009 and officially cut our ribbon with a Grand Opening on 6
July. We are happy to say that our business is thriving and so far, our
business performance is better than our Business Plan expected. So, we
are thrilled at the interest that you all have shown in us. It will be
our delight to hear from you and to share your excitement about your knitting
projects.
We have prepared
a 'walk through' of Bayberry Knitting to give you an idea of the feel for
the shop. Take a minute for this brief orientation...
The
focal point of our shop is our ‘Knitting Parlor' that is prominently placed
in front near the main entrance to our shop. Here, customers are welcomed
and encouraged to bring their knitting/crocheting projects and to socialize
with other customers. If you have begun a knitting or crocheting project
and need a few specific skills to be demonstrated to you, or if you have
a few questions on how to proceed, come join us in our Knitting Parlor
where we will be available to help you with a few minutes of Knitting Parlor
Training Assistance. Refreshments are served close by and background
music or an open/muted television is always on.
With
the help of our customers, we expect to organize a variety of promotional
"Charity Knitting' activities which include projects such as ‘Knitting
for Peace’, ‘Hat Knitting Wars’, ‘Scarf of the month’ classes, ‘Home Knitting
Parties’ and projects with local youth organizations such as the Girl Scouts-Craft
Badges. We give special discounts to students or student groups from registered
local schools.
Our shop attempts
to provide a nurturing environment that allows and encourages the sharing
of information regarding specific products, ideas, experience, techniques
that the customer would not otherwise know.
So, come by and visit
with us. While you browse through our shop, you will notice that we sell
only items of beauty and quality. You will find a broad variety of the
most current fibers that are available to knitters, crocheters and felters.
But we are especially proud to offer you high-quality training and a variety
of other learning services.
For your convenience,
we accept MasterCard, VISA and Discover cards, and we will always accept
cash and personal checks. Starting 1 August, our new Bayberry Knitting
Gift Card will be available. (See Front Page.) So buying gifts for the
'knitters' in your family or your friends will be especially easy.
As you browse through
our shop, you will no doubt also find your host, my husband, Jim as he
continues to spruce up the Bayberry. Ultimately, you will find that we
knock ourselves out to serve you.
We look forward to
seeing you... au plaisir de vous voir!
